As some of you know, I have expressed that there are six key dimensions within congregational ministry that can regularly receive our attention and can serve as target areas for enriching what we are about as Lutheran congregations. They might be considered the six pillars of ministry. As you look at each of these dimensions, ask yourself the question: What might we do in this area to make a difference in the lives of our members and in the lives of those who have yet to be part of the family of faith? 1. Outreach: Reaching the lost, getting the word out about our presence in the community, letting folks know that we have some Good News to share. 2. Christian Education: Helping people come to a greater understanding of all that God has done for us and how that can translate into daily living. 3. Worship: As Luther would say, thanking and praising God; touching the lives of people and sending them into daily life with courage and joy in serving the Lord. 4. Stewardship: God has blessed us with many different gifts, many different talents; He has charged us with responsibility to be stewards of all that He has given us. 5. Relationships: It’s the caring for one another; it’s caring for those outside our fold; it’s getting to know others in a way that responds to the needs and concerns that we all face. 6. Service: Reaching out in service to the people of the community; the people within our midst; it=s serving others in every way that we can.
It’s a place to start as we consider goals for moving into the 21st century. There are challenges and opportunities within each of the six dimensions that can provide us some specific goals for work in ministry. Take a sheet of paper and make three columns. a) In the first column write one of the six dimensions allowing space for writing responses. b) In the heading of the second column write: Things I feel pleased about... c) In the heading of the third column write: Things I am concerned about... d) Now across from each of the dimensions complete the worksheet. There you have a way to begin identifying areas that might be worked on in the months ahead. Mission and Ministry Facilitator, Area D Texas District Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod
