CORE VALUES

Core values are the basic convictions and priorities derived from Scripture which govern the way a church or organization operates to carry out its purpose. These principles are not doctrinal statements, but doctrine will influence and shape these core values, which can be easily translated into action.

Core values are the 5-7 key statements which reflect the distinctives of a church. They describe the unique way which people in the church do its work and how they relate to each other in that work.

Why are values important?

People, churches and organizations behave in ways which are generally consistent with their real core values. Just saying something is a value is not sufficient. Actions validate the values. Conflict often arises from differing expectations which are shaped by personal values. Most strategic planning fails because values are not articulated at the beginning of the process. If values differ significantly, even the best action plan will not be effectively implemented. Values provide the foundation for formulating goals and setting the direction of the church's ministry.

Examples of ministry values, principles and resulting actions

Many principles and actions can be drawn out of a core value. By linking core values to specific behaviors, you will help people understand and clarify expectations.

Value ~ Intimacy with God

+    Principle - Intimacy with God empowers God's people for effective ministry.

+    Action - We will regularly practice spiritual disciplines.

Value ~ Relevance

+    Principle - Methods must change to effectively reach the ministry focus group.

+    Action - We will make sure that our worship services are understandable to the churched and unchurched person.

Value ~ Openness

+    Principle - Clear and honest communication facilitates the mission of the church.

+    Action -  Leaders will share where they are going so people can follow.

Value ~ Empowerment

+    Principle - People who are empowered accomplish great things for the kingdom of God.

+    Action - We will believe in people and mobilize them according to their gifts and passion.

Value ~ Multiplication

+    Principle - Leadership development is critical for a vital growing church.

+    Action - We will develop apprentices at every level.

Core values are guidelines the church will go back to when making decisions about and carrying out ministry.
